Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1854! That is NOT a typo. Gottlieb Grimm came over from Germany where his father was a bookbinder. He opened the bindery initially with a partner calling it the "Madison Bindery". But he bought out his partner in 1874 and re-named it "Grimm Book Bindery, Inc." It's been in the family ever since!
What is your primary product or service?
Hardcover binding. We repair or restore older or worn books. Or we make a totally new book from your sent pages or file that we can print. Book cloth, leather, imitation leather or printed covers are available. We strive to handle whatever the customer wants to design!
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
This is a family business. Held now for over 5 generations. So, obviously for the family, they were brought up in it. Starting by coming on weekends or after school and sweeping up or coming to work with Mom & Dad. Then as they got older, they learned the trade from their parents. A skill passed down through the generations.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
While other binderies make their customers "fit into a box" only being able to make basic books we strive to "fit into our customer's box". Tayloring the specific service THEY need for their situation. We do numerous odd jobs in addition to bookbinding, portfolios, drop spin boxes, repair photo albums, old cigar boxes, gun cases, leather inlays for antique desks, gold tooling, etc. Our skills allow us to take a number of older antique items and bring them back to life.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Just the one. There are no plans to expand. We currently just have one shift, so when business increases, we just expand our hours in the same building!
Provide detailed directions to your location
Take Interstate 90/94 (now also called Interstate 39) into Madison and get off at the Highway 12/18 exit West to Madison (locally known as the “Beltline Highway”). Note: If coming from Chicago area, it’s a left exit; if coming from Wisconsin Dells area, it’s a normal right exit).
Take 12/18 Hwy / Beltline to the South Towne Drive exit (about 3rd exit down). At the lights you’ll go South (which is a left if coming from East or right if coming from the West) on South Towne Dr.
The road brings you into a “round-a-bout”. If it was a normal road, at this point, you would be taking a left on Industrial Ave. To achieve this in the round-a-bout, you go 3/4ths of the way around the circle and then veer off to the right. (Hint: Going into the round-a-bout stay in the center lane, if you follow the lines, it will take you to the outer lane ½ way through).
Once on Industrial, you’ll be heading East, continue down about 2-3 blocks and the road will veer to the left, follow curve around (it changes to Gisholt at the curve, but there’s no sign to say that). We’re on the right side just past Quality Pumps and the big Super Wal-Mart is across the Street from us (a good landmark – we’re East of Wal-Mart).
If you get to Royal Ave. or the Beltline, you went too far!
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash, Check, Cashiers Check,Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.
Which areas do you service?
Nationwide - locally folks stop in. Nationally, they email files or send their books in. We even have a number of international customers - Canada, Australia, England & Japan see shipments from us on a regular basis.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
The company is owned through shares by the Grimm family. However, Bill Grimm (president) and his sister, Judy (Grimm) Stair (secretary/treasurer) run the day to day operations. They are a brother/sister team.
What are your hours of operation?
Monday - Friday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
We just love it when customers call back & say they love their book! As bookbinders, you get a little attached to your work. Not like normal manufacturing, people buy a lot of stuff online - shirts, shoes, coffee, widgets... they're manufactured in mass without a connection. But when you send Grandma's Bible in to have the tattered cover replaced in new leather with her name embossed in gold, it's a little closer to the heart than a new pair of shoes. So, when you call or email and say, "Grandma loved her Bible, she started crying and told us about how she got it at her First Communion..." Well, THAT is what we love to hear! That our work touched someones hear!
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
Our motto when figuring out the best way to repair an old book is "what would you do if it were your book, or your parents book?" So, that's probably close to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." In a family business, the employees feel like family and we want our customers to feel the same way too!
