How long have you been in business?
We have been a State Street staple for over 26 years (as of 2010).
What is your primary product or service?
We carry books and gifts to nourish the spirit.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Mimosa opened its doors in May of 1984. The original owner, Patty Roth, had a vision of a community bookstore focused on the emerging alternatives in social thinking and beliefs. She also used the space for community programs. It was a very exciting time, and Madison owes Patty its deepest gratitude for her 17 years of dedicated work to establish Mimosa as a key resource store for alternative choices. In July of 2001, Patty sold the business to Beth Wortzel and Jim Powell. In January of 2003, Beth and Jim moved Mimosa from Henry St. to its new location at 260 W. Gilman Street, just off the corner of State Street. Then, in September of 2004, Beth and Jim formed a business partnership with longtime Madison residents Diane and Gary Doughman. This partnership helped Mimosa expand the programs available in the upstairs Activity Room, and put a greater range of products in the store. In June of 2006, Diane and Gary bought Beth and Jim’s shares of the business, and have been expanding the store and its offerings ever since. In January of 2009, Ashley and Zach Leavy purchased a portion of Mimosa and are happily co-owning the store with Diane and Gary. Mimosa owes great deal of gratitude to all of its various owners, past and present, who have each left their mark on this ever-evolving resource center. In May of 2009, Mimosa was featured in the presigious New Age Retailer Magazine as a highlighted thriving New Age business. Diane and Ashley were interviewed about their unique business insights and experiences. It was an honor to be included in this publication.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our low prices and friendly, personable staff set us apart form the big box book stores. We are so very thankful for our knowledgable, dedicated staff, without whom, we couldn't be the Mimosa that we are today.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
There is only one Mimosa and this is how we like it - it's a Madison destination!

We are located in downtown Madison, WI at the corner of Gilman and State Street, Madison’s premier shopping district: 260 West Gilman Street Madison, WI 53703 By Foot/Bike: We are located West of the Capitol Building at the corner of State, Gilman, & Broom Streets (about half way between the UW campus and the Capitol Building) By Bus: Take any of the following routes to come to the State Street Mall area: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 25, 27, 28, 29, 37, 47, 56, 57, 58, 70, 71, 72, 81, 82. Visit the Metro Transit Trip Planner to plan your trip! By Car: For your convenience, the State Street Mall offers parking at the following locations: -Francis Street Ramp (by State Street Brats) -State Street Capitol (corner of Carrol & Johnson) -Buckeye Lot (between State & Henry - get to it from Gilman or Gorham) -Metered Street Parking (free on Sundays, Holidays, and after 6:00 pm on weekdays - otherwise $1.50/hour) -Free two-hour parking on un-metered streets

Co-owners Diane Doughman and Ashley Leavy do a lovely job of keeping Mimosa growing all the time.

Store Hours: Monday-Friday: 11:00 am to 7:00 pm Saturday: 10:00 am to 6:30 pm Sunday: 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm We also have seasonal summer and holiday hours in which we may be open later. Please call ahead to find out (608) 256-5432.
