Dance Academy
Monona Academy of Dance is dedicated to creating an atmosphere which fosters self-esteem, discipline, and positive influences, all of which can be carried into many other aspects of the student’s life.
Our classes take dancers from their first steps on the dance floor through their launch as professional dancers. Our curriculum includes pre-ballet (3 years and up), classical ballet, jazz, modern, tap, and hip hop. We also offer specialized partnering and boys-only classes.
At our Monona location, you will find La Boutique, where you can purchase any dancewear items you may need (including shoes, leotards, tights, accessories, and more)
Monona Acadeny of Dance is proud to be a tenant at the new Sun Prairie Ice Arena. Classes are now being held at 838 Grove ST Sun Prairie.

How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
JoJean Retrum – Professional dancer & graduate of UW-Milwaukee in dance, music and theater. Training includes studying at American Ballet Theatre and the Harkness House in NYC, and with teachers such as Gus Giordano, Luigi, and Joe Tremaine. Previously a soloist with the Milwaukee Ballet Company and Ruth Page Company, she also performed for 10 years at Melody Top Theater. Currently, JoJean is the Director of Monona Academy of Dance and the Artistic Director of Dance Wisconsin.
Monona Academy of Dance has been at its current location for the past thirty-five years and Ms. Retrum has been the primary educator. She prides herself on the numerous dancers that have gone on to professional careers as dancers, actors/actresses and choreographers. She is honored that so many have returned to teach at the school or perform with Dance Wisconsin. She is honored and her heart swells each time a student returns to visit or enrolls their child in dance at Monona Academy of Dance.
A sought after guest instuctor, Ms. Retrum recently was brought in as a guest educator at the UW-Madison Dance Department to teach her specialty - technique. She has been honored by the Dance Council of Wisconsin for her achievements in dance, as the Outstanding Teacher in 2002 by Youth America Grand Prix and served as Regional Dance America's - MidStates President 2012-2014.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Monona Academy of Dance is a great place to receive instruction whether you want to become a professional dancer or you simply enjoy the art/sport of dance and want to get better at it. We have a huge number of alumni performing all over the United States. We believe more than any other studio in the area. Our studio is known nation wide for it level of teaching ballet technique. The primary focus at our studio is ballet because it is the foundation of all dance. We believe that even the youngest dancer can and should learn proper terminology so that if they were to leave our instruction and attend another professional level school they would be prepared.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
There are two locations of Monona Academy of Dance 6332 Monona Drive and 838 Grove ST.

Monona Academy of Dance and La Boutique in Monona are located off Hwy 12/18 (Beltline) on Monona Drive. Once you cross Broadway both studio and store are the third building on the right hand side of the street. In Sun Prairie the studio is located within the Cardinal Rink of the Sun Prairie Ice Arena for reaching dancers and figure skaters. The Sun Prairie Ice Arena is located next door to the Sun Prairie High School on Grove Street which is also Hwy N.

Monona Academy of Dance offers dance instruction. Located within Monona Academy of Dance is La Boutique which is a dance wear store selling everything from shoe wear to leotards.

Studio is owned by Jo Jean Retrum. Office Manager for Monona Academy of Dance and La Boutique is Dottie Patterson.
What are your hours of operation?
Academic Year Hours at our Monona Location are Monday through Thursday 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm. and Saturdays 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
That their dancer has grown as a dancer and a human being. That they are finding success as an adult based upon the skills our studio taught them.
