Custom Handcrafted Furniture made from Dane County Hardwoods
The Wood Cycle's Hayloft Gallery features examples of our custom designed furniture and other fine woodworking products. With a 150+ year family history in the state, we are a family business working solely with Wisconsin hardwoods. Located just outside Madison, much of our wood is from urban logs, even those removed from the state capital lawn and along Monona Drive. We operate our own saw mill, solar kiln and complete woodworking shop, all from the buildings of a restored farmstead. Our design influence include the clean lines of mission, craftsman and shaker traditions, but mixed with the refined rustic elements of live edge woodwork. Come see us and be amazed at the beauty growing around us. Call first to assure we are not making a delivery to another customer.

Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I began using The Wood Cycle name in the mid 1990s and I began doing side projects. At the insistence of friends and family I officially formed the company under that name and moved from the basement to our current site in 2003.
What is your primary product or service?
Fine Woodworking. One day that is a furniture piece, the next its a fireplace mantle, then a kitchen, columns, etc. Doing the same work day after day is not nearly so inspiring.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
When your grandfather is a cabinet maker and your grandmother is a water color artist, what do you expect. I was buying tools in my teens and then became distracted by a 20 year career that limited my woodworking and bike riding to the hobby category.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Local. By working from tree to finished product, with our own sawmill and solar kiln, we not only can talk about taking the tree from outside the kitchen window and make it into the kitchen, but we've done just that, more than once.
Passion. We do this not as a job, but because we can. I had a job, enjoyed it for years, but this...
Sustainability. Every step of the process from harvesting methods to sawing, drying processing to tree planting is as efficient as one can be---and then we plant them back again.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
This one location suites us just fine. In 2008 we moved a 36'x80' barn across the snowy fields to expand our operation and now have room to grow--not so big as to prevent me from being able to enjoy the wood myself, but at least enough to feed my family.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Take Fish Hatchery Road South from Madison's beltline highway, just over 8 miles. And this is where local knowledge kicks in. When you seem Moe and Joe the donkeys on one corner, Country View Vet Clinic on the other corner, continue another half mile straight ahead. The Wood Cycle is the farmstead on the right. 1239 S. Fish Hatchery Rd Always best to call first to make sure we are not out making a delivery to another client.
What type of payments do you accept?
Visa/MC Local Check and of course cash still works.
Which areas do you service?
South Central Wisconsin, with oocasional trips to Chicago, Milwaukee and points north.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Paul Morrison--this is a family owned business. I am involved in every phase of the operation, from design to instalation.
What are your hours of operation?
Official Hours: 9:00AM - 5:30PM weekdays, by appointment evenings and weekends.
Unofficial Hours: I live here, so call and I may be around.
