Local computer experts providing efficient, flexible, practical solutions to your technical issues.
Ctrl-Shift is a technical service and consulting company founded on the principle that a person's technology is theirs and theirs alone. They are free to use whatever hardware and software they like for as long as they like and have a clear understanding of how it works. They are also entitled to control of their digital creations; any picture drawn, document written, database created, or music composed belongs to the creator as much as if they'd done it by hand.
While these may seem like obvious statements, corporate strategy in the technology sector tends to revolve around finding new ways of forcing you, the customer, to use certain products and services and withholding information about them. Proprietary file-formats, service contracts, poor documentation, repression of alternatives, and non-compliance with programming and engineering standards are all common tactics used keep the consumers in the dark and dependant on the company for help. In the event that a company decides to discontinue a product, ceases to support it, or goes out of business, the end user can easily find themselves without a way to retrieve their data and move to a new system.
At Ctrl-Shift we pride ourselves on keeping you knowledgable and in control of your own equipment, software, and products. To this end, we provide versatile open source solutions and see to it that you have a good understanding of their inner workings. We insure that you are never trapped or restricted by a closed-ended system . Nothing makes us happier than to see clients working easily and efficiently. We insist that you continue to do business with us because you want to, not because you have to.

Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Though Ctrl-Shift Inc. came into being in 2009, our technicians all have more than 10 years experience in computer consulting, repair, and design.
What is your primary product or service?
We conduct repairs and design solutions for individuals and businesses who depend on fast, efficient computer systems. Anything from virus removal to figuring out why some file won't open in Microsoft Word to fixing a purchasing glitch in somebody's online store.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
The inner-workings of computers was a hobby for me all the way through grade school. Something about these devices enticed me and I felt compelled to fiddle with and invariably break them, and fix them, and break them again, and so on. I held several computer tech jobs during high school and after.
I was a memeber of the student IT staff at my university and the lead technician at a local repair outfit in the years following. I was never really satisfied though by how the business was run and my role in it. I wanted to call the shots and try to run a different kind of company. To that end, I reconnected with some tech-oriented friends from school and we founded Ctrl-Shift Inc.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
At Ctrl-Shift we have a strong emphasis on customer involvement in solving a problem. Too many times in my IT career I've seen customers walk away from an encounter with a technical professional with no understanding of what the problem was or how it was fixed. The "computer guy" did his "magic" and everything works again, but the customer is no wiser than when they came in.
Not everyone needs to be a technical professional, but the industry has led everyone to believe that they can use a computer or manage a web site or keep a database without knowing anything about how these things work and that simply isn't true.
We're here to help. But the power, the control is ultimately yours.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash, check, and Paypal
Which areas do you service?
The repair business is limited to the Madison area, but we have clients all over the country for web design and server administration and other kinds of remote consulting and support.
What are your hours of operation?
10:00-5:00 on weekdays, 11:00-4:00 on Saturday.
