Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I started my own floral design business in 2011, after working at a couple flower shops and as a freelance florist for the previous five years. Prior to that, I worked alongside the floral design professor at the University of Illinois while earning my Horticulture degree.
What is your primary product or service?
Custom floral arrangements for weddings and other special events. I especially love meeting with brides and exchanging ideas, then using my creativity and experience working with the natural beauty of flowers to add the perfect amount of color and texture to enhance the look and feel of their special day.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
With my work in college for my floral design professor, I was able to participate in floral design competitions, organize campus flower exhibits, and combine my education in horticulture with my love of style, art, creativity, and crafts. I worked in a couple flower shops after college, then as a freelance florist helping out multiple retail florists for weddings while working another full-time job, and picked up wedding flower gigs mostly by personal recommendations of friends, then those friends' friends, and so on. When I had my first child, it made a lot of sense to officially start my own business, since I love doing floral design, and also so I would have the flexibility to focus on my own wedding flower gigs while being a full-time mom.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I have an eye for style and color, a deep appreciation for natural beauty, an awareness of current trends, and experience creating custom designs that are both modern and unique to my clients' desires. By focusing only on weddings and special events, I am able to work very closely with each client and get to know them personally. I encourage you to check out my website and if you like what you see, then let's meet for coffee and discuss ideas for your wedding.
Also, since I operate out of my home, I can offer competitive prices due to virtually no overhead retail shop costs, and I only purchase flowers as needed for clients' events through relationships with local flower growers (offering the freshest picks) and wholesalers (able to provide any color or type of exotic flower).
What type of payments do you accept?
Check
Which areas do you service?
Madison, WI, and the surrounding area. I can travel to northern Illinois and the Milwaukee area for an additional fee.
What are your hours of operation?
I am available for consultations most evenings and weekends. Contact me to set up an appointment.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
The best type of compliment is simply a personal recommendation to a friend. Most of my business has come from personal recommendations, and when a bride's friend whom I have never met asks me to be the floral designer for her wedding too, I know I did a good job.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
"...And what is done with love is well done." - Vincent Van Gogh
